Description

Renoir Victorian Button Boots offer sturdy sophistication with the perfect mid-Victorian silhouette. Period-correct for the late 1850s to the 1880s, Renoir features all-leather materials, true side-buttoning closure, and the comfort you need for all-day re-enactments.

These mid-Victorian and Bustle Era boots have square toes, a short heel molded from an original, and an attractive scalloped edge and top, making them practical yet feminine, and ideal for a fashionable Victorian lady.

Wear Renoirs for historical events, or add a bit of incognito history to your cottagecore, dark academia, or historybounding outfits. Renoirs have appeared on screen in "Victoria," and "Alias Grace."

You will need a button hook to easily and quickly get your boots on. Button hooks are sold separately.

Beautiful but not robust

These boots are beautiful and comfortable, but I don't recommend wearing them as if they are anything other than pumps. That is to say, don't think you can wear them outside to walk down the street, any more than you would a pair of high heals meant for the office. I wore mine a couple of times inside- no problems at all. I wore them a third time outside to walk in a 1.5km parade, on a level and smooth, paved street and the heals are destroyed. The heal caps sheered off from the boot heal and now I will have to pay a cobbler to remove them and repair them enough to apply new caps. I expected more durability from these, but I was wrong. These are an indoor only boot, for light wear only.

The heel cap is a consumable part that does wear down over time or when worn on rough surfaces, and is intended to be replaced as it wears down. Heel caps are a tricky thing - different temperatures can cause them to expand and contract, and occasionally an individual's walking pattern can make them a bit more likely to make a break for it. We do include an extra pair of heel caps in the shoe box just for instances like these!

The Perfect Boot

I'm so pleased that I decided to start my journey with American Duchess with these boots. I have a difficult foot to fit (B-width heel, C-width front, and fallen arches) and normally take a 6.5W. Given this, I opted to go up a half size to the 7. The length turned out to be perfect, and the boot fit my heel (even with a half orthotic) without any issues. In fact, my heel fits better in these boots than in any of the other shoes I own! Although the width at the toe was tight, I used shoe stretchers and they now fit perfectly. I'm absolutely in love these boots — so delighted with the purchase!

Snug fit but comfortable

These boots are fantastic. They arrived really quickly. I wear a 9.5 - 10 and have high arches. I bought the 10s and they were snug. They fit comfortably with thinner tights/socks and I expect will loosen some as i wear them more. If you don't have a button hook i highly recommend getting one. The buttons are very snug and difficult to fasten without a hook.

Sizing Issues

I bought these shoes, and listened to the reviews that stated the sizing “was on the nose”. I wear a 8 1/2 but have been purchasing 9’s and 9 1/2’s in AD shoes. I chose to buy the 9 and they just came, but are too tight. Unfortunately I need the 9 1/2 and now they are sold out (in merlot). I wish I would have bought both sizes and just returned the one that didn’t fit.
I love AD shoes and have bought many recently. Because I love these Renoir boots so much I bought a brown pair in the 9 .5. Thank you American Duchess for such a beautiful collection of well made shoes and boots!!

Runs Small and Short

I was astonished at how short and snug these were when I purchased them in my usual size of 7.5. I had to try them on with my thinnest modern nylon stockings. Usually AD shoes are a little long for me but my toes went right to the end (and not in a good way). They were uncomfortably tight across the ball of my foot. Additionally the curved-in shaping around the heel/achilles tendon was very snug and felt like it might cause blisters. I will have to exchange for a size up.
Normally AD shoes fit true to size for me or run a little big as my feet are a little on the narrow and short side and I have only sized up when I intended to wear them with a thicker/wooly stocking. To give you an idea here is how I fit in the other styles I own: 1st version of Emmas that ran small (8 perfect fit), Maes (7.5 a little too long), Keckleys (8 a bit too large/long but intended to wear with thicker socks) and Berties (7.5 was too long and a little too wide but the 7 was a hair too snug).

The Renoir does not have a reinforced toe box, which can feel strange on modern feet not used to it. This is historically correct construction, but ladies desiring a little more room in the toes should order a half-size larger.
