Looks good in any year

I got these over two years ago (and forgot to review them til now), back when the green option was available. I'd love to see that color come back someday. I love the laces. They actually stay tied all day long, whereas the silky laces on other AD shoes constantly come undone. 2in heel is my maximum, but I could still wear these all day. They go so well with almost any outfit. They get tons of compliments, and one person described them as "power shoes." I'm going to keep wearing these for as long as I can.

Wonderful shoe, excellent customer service

I had emailed the AD team several months prior to my purchase that I was planning to wear these for my wedding, and asked when they would be back in stock (as they had been out of stock for a while at this time). They quickly and friendly responded with the information that I needed -- they were revamping the material and would be out of stock until probably summer. Then, a few months later, I got an emails that they had *just* restocked. I immediately purchased my dream wedding shoe. I was amazed that they remember to email me when they came back. The shoes are beautiful and breaking in nicely. I cannot wait to incorporate them into my wedding outfit.

Thank you to the American Duchess team for your continued excellent service and quality product!!

Perfect fit.

I usually wouldn't wear new leather shoes for a full day, but I found myself suddenly having to drive to Boston after my FIL was taken to the hospital. I then spent the next 12 hours pacing and my feet were perfectly comfortable the whole time. A surprise treat on a stressful day.

An equal fitting

I love the look of the Gibsons and was so excited when they arrived, sadly had to return. I bought a pair of these in size 7 for myself, and 8 for my daughter, and one shoe fit, and in the other, the heel was popping out, for us both. We never had this problem with any other pair of shoes, so I think it's a manufacturing flaw. I bought a pair of Bellatrix and Londoners in size 7 and they fit well.

Wish it were higher quality

First time buying American Duchess and I'm sad. I wear the shoes all the time not just for historical things because they are beautiful. But I found a local cobbler for guidance on shoe care. He told me to bring them back when the toe part of the sole had worn through the thinner sole layer because he could put a toe cap on the sole that would make it last longer. I did, and he ended up replacing the entire bottom sole because the sole had a cavity in it. I know nothing about shoes and so I quote him: he said, "the soles are cheap".
I don't like writing mean reviews so I'll say what I do like as well. They are extremely comfortable, fit dang well, and garner me many compliments on the regular. They make your feet look adorable and the heels are very sensible for a klutz like me who twists her ankle all the time. I can wear them all day without any trouble, and I can't even say that about my converse.
I may give American Duchess a second chance because I have a cobbler I trust, and I do recognize that you are paying for the vintage designs, but I am disappointed that such expensive shoes are described as having cheap soles.

It sounds like your cobbler misidentified the sole type at first and gave you inaccurate advice, then had to backpedal once you'd worn them through. The Gibsons are a cemented sole construction (used in most women's shoes for over 200 years!) with quality materials. This is a different construction method than a Goodyear or Blake welt construction. Both types are valid and one isn't necessarily 'better' than the other, but they do require different resoling methods! Rather than wait to resole until you wear holes in the sole, cemented soles should be resoled before holes appear. You can read more about sole maintenance and repair on our sole care page under the Information tab > Shoe Care and Customization.
