I have Marilyns in white and black, both 6.5 wide. I love the shape and style, and had wanted them for years- I could never snag a pair in black wide width after a year of waiting, so ordered them in white which were MUCH smaller out the box than the black ones I finally got a couple weeks ago. The black are almost perfect, but the white needed a few weeks of stretching- now the white pair have overstretched and I need heel inserts to keep them from slipping off my feet so I am slightly worried the black will stretch too far since they feel roomier when new. Either way, the quality feels high, they are a very stable shoe because of the Cuban heel. The vamp at the toe box is just the right amount of detail to make them feel authentic and not costume-like. I do wish there was an extra wide version!
Sizing is very interesting, as my feet are 23.6cm and 23.8cm long- size chart would suggest a 7.5. I'm never larger than a 7, and at the last minute ordered a 6.5 which are perfect for me after stretching/molding them to my feet. My feet are extremely wide (11cm wide at the toe splay when barefoot, which I believe makes them EEEE) so I knew these shoes in a D width would be narrow on me. Still worth it for the look.
My only complaint is the insole sticks to my foot and gets pulled out when I take them off, and it can take some real finagling to get them to sit right inside/up to the edges inside the shoe again.
I would still buy them in every color if I could. I'd love more wide options for 40s/50s/60s styles.
I had previously bought a pair of 18th century style Kensington's in a 10W and they fit great, so I ordered Marilyn in a 10W. These are two completely different styles so that didn't work. The Marilyn was too long. AD graciously accepted my return of the Marilyns. But I had to wait for the 9.5W to be restocked. It was worth the wait. The fit is MUCH better. These are gorgeous shoes!!
I've had these shoes for several months now. The heal is very comfortable for being as tall as it is. I have no problem walking around in them despite the height. These are my favorite heals, and I'm so glad I purchased them. There are a few things you need to be aware of though if you plan to buy. The soles of the shoe were not made for modern surfaces. The first time I wore them, the brief walk from a well paved parking lot to my desk wore away a significant portion of the protective coating on the bottom of the shoe. Several months later, the coating is completely gone. Also, be aware that the dye on the inside of the shoe will stain whatever socks, hose or stockings you wear with them. Finally, at least for me, the shoe is a bit small from the toebox despite being a wide. Still, these are well made shoes that will last you a long time if you give them a bit of tlc. My biggest gripe is with the soles of the shoes but that is easily fixable, and I will likely be replacing the soles soon with something that can withstand the ground better.
We're so glad you like them! RE: the soles, the water resistant coating on the leather soles will wear away, and that's normal - as it does, you protect the soles with either mink or neatsfoot oil to keep them water resistant and kepe the leather moisturized. Of course, you can also opt to have a cobbler put half or full rubber soles over the leather if you prefer. We have a whole page on sole care here: https://www.americanduchess.com/pages/how-to-care-for-leather-soles
I bought these shoes because I love the look....wore them to an event for a couple of hours....couldn't stand to wear them much longer....to tight...wish they were a little wider.
We're glad you like them! We don't recommend wearing a brand new leather shoe out to an event rigth away - that's a recipe for sore feet! You'll want to break the shoes in a bit with short periods of wear first, which will allow the shoes to soften and stretch a bit without hurting your feet. If you need them to be a touch wider after break in, you can also do some more specific stretching with shoe stretch spray, the spray and shoe stretching devices, or have your cobbler stretch them for you!
Beautiful quality, fit, and timeless. The best brand of shoes I’ve ever owned. I plan to buy more!
