Description

Our most popular vintage oxford, now available in D-width!

Why sacrifice your vintage style for practicality when you can have both with a great pair of common sense oxfords?

A good, solid oxford is a real asset to any vintage fashion enthusiast.

Our Claire 1940s Oxfords meet all the requirements of a sensible shoe while also being stylish and unique.

Claire 1940s Oxfords are direct reproductions of an original CC41 compliant "Academy Girl" brand shoe. They meet all the requirements for most military unit dress shoes and are similar in design and decoration to original styles sold as military dress shoes by historic brands such as Red Cross and Lotus.

Claires are constructed of a black calf leather upper, lined in brown pigskin leather, with leather soling and a 1.6 in / 4 cm stacked-look heel, just like the original.

Great fit, cute look, some finishing touches could be improved

The shoes are comfortable out of the box and look pretty and well made. I am not usually someone who wears heels but bought these for a formal event and am looking to continue wearing these in work settings afterwards. I appreciate that they hit a sweet spot of not too feminine yet dressy enough for my purposes.
Things I would have found useful to know before buying: I did not find the advice I received on sizing from the website and via email particularly helpful (the email response was a remix of the website info, so I wouldn't bother emailing about size info again. Instead dig through the reviews, which I found much more helpful). Since I live in Canada, I also did not want to risk paying return nvm exchange shipping with the charge already at $50 on the original order. I will try to provide the best advice I can here for those facing similar issues: I got the shoe in a 8 1/2 wide and they fit pretty well. My feet are ~25 cm long (one is a bit shorter) and ~10 cm wide with medium to high volume. My feet are also wide all the way to the front (blunt/square instead of pointy toe alignment). The 8 1/2 wide works well but there is not much room left, so if you're planning on wearing thicker socks or have even marginally larger feet than I do, I would size up. I have also come to the conclusion that I won't be buying shoes in the regular width as the Claires are already supposed to be roomier than e.g. the Londoner and I am still glad I went for the wide option. Anything much narrower would be uncomfortable and probably deform the upper with wear.
Additionally, I also found the shoes extremely slippery on my wooden floors (which you would not realize if you only tried shoes on carpeted areas as required by the company to maintain the right to return). This may improve with breaking in of the soles but I cannot speak to that yet as I did not dare wear these even around the house. I bought this pair to wear on-stage and cannot afford to find out if they'll be as slippery then, so I added non-slip soles, which improved things a little.
Lastly, I did not find that the flat laces suited the shoe. They seemed more appropriate for a sneaker or similar style. I replaced mine with round dress shoe laces and much prefer that look.
Both updates are shown in the picture and cost about $20 to do myself (a local cobbler would have charged $60 to install proper non-slip soles, but I was not prepared to pay that much at this time).
Obviously, this is all a matter of personal preference, hence 4 instead of 5 stars, but I hope my thoughts and modifications will helps someone in the decision making process.

The real question is

when am I ever going to wear the other shoes in my closet now that I have these?

Great shoes

Great fitting comfortable shoe that I've been wanting for years. I was so excited when AD started making wide sizes. The shoes are worth the price!

Good Wide Shoe for Wide Feet

Lovely shoe especially for wide feet. So happy that AD is offering wide shoes! This is my third and most comfortable pair, yet. Style of toe box is the best of all the shoes I've bought so far. Just have to get used to the higher (for me) heel. Also, coverage is good if you want to wear invisible socks.
